Action Requested
The City Council is requested to authorize four Street Division Employees to attend a two day
training seminar at the Caterpillar headquarters in Peoria, IL.
Background/Discussion
Caterpillar and Ziegler's Inc. are offering a Governmental Training and Safety Days Seminar as an
opportunity for governmental agencies to improve safety procedures and equipment utilization.
The seminars axe held in Peoria IL on July 30 and July 31,.2008. Since we recently purchased a
new Caterpillar loader, our Ziegler sales representative has reserved four positions at this training
fox Elk River Street Division employees.
Public Works staff recommends sending Mark Thompson, Bob Mahutga, Mike Zappa, and Perry
Milless. Each person will attend all training sessions and will also have the opportunity to gain
valuable insight within their job responsibilities. Continuing education credits are included.
Financial Impact
The only costs to the City will be the employee's straight time wages, transportation, and two
nights in a hotel, based on double occupancy. The employees would use the Engineering Tech
vehicle with an estimated gasoline cost of $194.00 and the hotel rooms that total about $600.00.
Meals will be provided by Caterpillar or by the employees themselves. The out of pocket cost for
the training is $794.00. The funds available in the Training Budget are $383.00. This leaves a
shortfall of $411.00. I have discussed this proposal with Tim Simon, Finance Director and Terry
Maurer, Public Works Director, and they both concur that funds can be re-allocated since it is
expected a few expenditures will be under budget in other line items, within the Street Division
budget, to cover this conference.
