6.3. SR 07-21-2008REQUEST FOR ACTION To Item Number Ci Council 6.3. Agenda Section Meeting Date Prepared by Administration Jul 21, 2008 Tina Allard, Ci Clerk Item Description Reviewed by Consider Logo Clothing Sales to the Public Lori ohnson, Ci Administrator Reviewed by Action Requested Council direction on logo promotion to the general public. Some options for Council to consider include: ^ Sell logo clothing to the public ^ Sell other products that can't be worn, such as mugs ^ Have a designer create an graphic that features the city and would not include the logo ^ A contest to have a resident design an image that represents the City ^ Only offer the logo sales internally ^ Any other suggestions Background/Discussion As part of the Council planning workshops held earlier in the year, the Council requested staff to promote logo clothing more heavily to staff, boards, and the public. This has been accomplished to the boards and to staff and will be advertised more heavily on a bi-annual basis. Staff has been working on a program for the general public. We could find no cities (we even checked outside the state) that offered city logo clothing to the general public due to liability concerns, such as someone impersonating a city employee. The City of Apple Valley stated they had problems in the past and they require the logo to be cut out of the shirt. With that being said, there is nothing to stop someone from buying a logo shirt from Goodwill that may have been dropped off by a city employee. Cities that offer product for sale, state their sales tend to be minimal. Staff at Parks & Recreation stated only a handful of the 144 shirts ordered for the downtown concert series have been sold. Not many cities offered items for sale. Of those that do, some offered items such as mugs with the city logo for sale. Or if they offered clothing, they had a community event featured on the shirt. An example would be the ArtSoup event. Some offered shirts that would state, "Elk River, Minnesota" and have a print screen graphic of something such as landmarks around town. Financial Impact Staff would need to order product in bulk ahead of time. If this is done it would come from the Council S:\Administxation\Council RCA\Branding Program\Logo Sales to Public.doc budget and should be budgeted for 2009. I'm unsure what the cost would be to hire someone to design a city image. Maybe the city could have a design contest but we would need to consider some rules and possibly establish some prizes or incentives.
