Approve the attached Wastewater Maintenance Operator I position description. Approve promoting
Dale Eckert, currently the Wastewater Division Laborer, to this position effective immediately, paid at
step A of pay grade 5 of the City's pay plan. Mr. Eckert would be eligible for any approved cost of living
increase January 1, 2009 and a step increase July 1, 2009 provided acceptable job performance.
Background/Discussion
This position is included in the 2008 budget and was to be filled July 1. Staff completed the attached
position description and the Personnel Committee reviewed the position and placed it at pay grade 5 of
the City's pay plan.
Dale Eckert has worked as the Laborer in the Wastewater Division since April of 2007. Mr. Eckert has
many years experience with mechanical and equipment maintenance and repair and his skills are greatly
underutilized as a Laborer. Mr. Eckert has proven to be a valuable employee and will be an asset to the
City in the Maintenance Operator I position.
Financial Impact
This is a budgeted position.

Position Summary
The Wastewater Maintenance Operator I performs maintenance on the sanitary sewer system, lift
stations and treatment facility. Performs welding fabrication and repairs. Operates light equipment.
May operate heave equipment. Maintains an assigned street division snow removal route.
Essential Functions
Performs wastewater maintenance and repair activities.
A. Assists in the maintenance and repair of the City's collection system, lift stations and
treatment facility.
B. Maintains traffic control signage on work projects within the road right of way.
C. Cuts or trims trees and brush on City property and road right of way.
2. Performs general maintenance activities.
A. Performs building (exterior and interior) and grounds maintenance as assigned.
B. Cuts, trims and removes brush from easements.
C. Performs routine cleaning activities at treatment facility.
D. Assists in snow removal at treatment facility and lift stations.
Performs level 1 equipment maintenance activities.
A. Performs daily lubrication level checks on vehicles and equipment that the employee
is assigned to operate.
B. Completes CDL checklist daily on CDL vehicles that the employee is assigned to
operate.
C. Reviews general condition of vehicle exterior and operating systems.
4. Performs other essential job duties.
A. Performs snow plowing, sanding and salting of City streets as assigned.
B. Regular and timely work attendance.
C. Follows all safety procedures.
D. Participates in safety training.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
^ Ability to operate light motorized equipment.
^ Ability to perform light equipment maintenance.
^ Ability to perform welding fox repair and fabrication of equipment.
^ Ability to lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods, and to perform strenuous
physical labor under adverse environmental conditions.
^ Ability to lift 50 pounds.
^ Ability to work independently.
Minimum Qualifications
^ High school diploma or equivalent.
^ Demonstrated experience operating light equipment.
^ Demonstrated welding experience.
^ Class B Commercial Driver's License or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
^ Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
^ One-year related work experience.
