Action Requested
Staff is seeking authorization to modify the landscaping on the Orono Parkway Medians.
Background/Discussion
Council has directed staff to develop cost effective, sustainable improvements to the landscaping on the
Orono Parkway medians. Staff worked with Park Commissioner Dave Anderson and a master gardener
to develop the most recent concept.
This concept utilizes three varieties of low maintenance, flowering perennials in a formal planting design
on the five median ends nearest to city hall. The perennials in the front row would be low growing to
help improve driver's sightlines. Staff believes that this plan dresses up the medians with a more formal
look in a cost effective and sustainable manner. The existing native planting signs would be replaced by
larger, more colorful signs.
Financial Impact
^ Plant material and mulch- $3,500 from street improvement reserve fund.
^ Signs- $200. Installation of signs and plantings would be by park maintenance staff
