6.2. SR 10-06-2008REQUEST FOR ACTION fiver To Item Number City Council 6.2. Agenda Section Meeting Date Prepared by Administration October 6, 2008 Bill Maertz, Parks and Recreation Director Item Description Reviewed by Consider Orono Median Plan Lori ohnson, Ci Administrator Reviewed by Action Requested Staff is seeking authorization to modify the landscaping on the Orono Parkway Medians. Background/Discussion Council has directed staff to develop cost effective, sustainable improvements to the landscaping on the Orono Parkway medians. Staff worked with Park Commissioner Dave Anderson and a master gardener to develop the most recent concept. This concept utilizes three varieties of low maintenance, flowering perennials in a formal planting design on the five median ends nearest to city hall. The perennials in the front row would be low growing to help improve driver's sightlines. Staff believes that this plan dresses up the medians with a more formal look in a cost effective and sustainable manner. The existing native planting signs would be replaced by larger, more colorful signs. Financial Impact ^ Plant material and mulch- $3,500 from street improvement reserve fund. ^ Signs- $200. Installation of signs and plantings would be by park maintenance staff Attachments ^ Orono Median Concept Design ^ Native Planting Sign Image ACtlon Motion by Second by Vote Follow Up C:\Documents and Settings\jmiller\Local Settings\'Tempoxary Internet Files\OLK3E\6 2 Orono Medians.doc n O z n m .9 C D r m n 2 ~. +. ~ N ~ ~ ~- -i D m , ~ ~,:.' r D D N Z m Z O ~.. ~~ .~ t x,~ ~ ,n ,~ E _ ~, ~ ... { z .~ ,r , ,;m 1 D g ~ „~, ~ ~~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~, ~ ~„~ ,, ° ~ r~ ~~ ORONO PARKWAY MEDIAN CONCEPT I ~ - ro ~ ,, ~ k < r ~ ~ ~. ....t ,,. ~ ~ y Hy Yl + .'. a l~ .: ~ J! / ... /////J ~, > $ r /// ~u ?' 5
