Item Description Reviewed by
Authorization to Direct Staff to Research Zoning Ordinance
Amendment Allowing Signage in the Commercial Reserve Reviewed by
(CRT) Zoning District
Action Requested
Authorization to prepare an Ordinance amendment that would allow signage in the Commercial Reserve
Zoning district.
Background/Discussion
The City created a Commercial Reserve Zoning District in 2007 to establish a transitional zoning in part
to preserve the area from aggressive, "interim" development and improvement that might otherwise
hamper desired end uses. The Ordinance as created does not allow signage.
The owners of the recently approved Elk River Extreme Motor Park feel signage would be advantageous
to their business, and are requesting the City to pursue an amendment. With Council's acceptance, staff
will review issues and develop an ordinance to address concerns to be reviewed by the Planning
Commission and City Council.
Financial Impact
None

Subject: Signage
Jeremy,
Thank you for your time today.
Per our discussion, I'm passing along a request on behalf of Elk River Extreme Motor Park (ERX) for
permission to place a sign on our property along Highway 169. I understand that the current interim
use regulations do not allow signs, but as I mentioned in our discussion earlier today, we would
respectfully ask for special consideration for this considering both the special nature of our operation,
as well as the fact that there are other businesses in this regulated area that currently have signs in
place.
It is my understanding that you will take this request to the Elk River City Council and ask that they
consider it.
We are just two months away from our first scheduled event, so we would greatly appreciate anything
that you and the council could do to expedite this process. If you have any questions, please don't
hesitate to contact me.
Thank you for your help with this.
Best regards,
cHRas cARLSOH
