This is a new program that will begin in 1995. Attached is a cover letter from Chamber Executive Vice President Jackie Schuelein which reviews the request. Also attached is a brochure which outlines the program. As the Council is aware, no funds are in the 1995 budget for this project. Box 490 Elk River, MN 55330 Dear Mayor Duitsman: 9 ~~ ~~.i ~ .. i~1~ EIk Riner Area Chamber of Commerce This letter is a follow-up to our conversation today about the City of Elk River becoming an annual contributor to the Elk River Area Leadership Development Program. As you know, the program is designed to develop future leaders for the community who are informed, dynamic, qualified, and motivated. We plan to sponsor this program annually, September through May, and anticipate graduating 35 participants per year. The Chamber firmly believes that the graduates of the Leadership Perspectives program would be excellent candidates for the City of Elk River to consider for various boards and commissions. ~'he Chamber of Commerce would like to encourage the City of Elk River to become a contributing partner in this program by annually contributing to the program in the range of $2,500 - $3,000. The program's operating budget is $9,750 with the participants paying a registration fee of $225 if they are a member of the Chamber and $300 if they are anon-member. This leaves a deficit of $3,000 that the Chamber would have to absorb to provide such a program. Some potential opponents of the City participating in this program might azgue that the Chamber could just raise the registration fee. We would like to offer the opportunity for all residents of the community the chance to participate in this program and therefore we must try to keep the cost associated with registering for the program at a reasonable and modest fee. I hope the City will consider this proposal as I believe that this program can and will benefit the Ciry. Having better informed citizens who will be able to offer their individual contributions to the community by becoming better educated on the whole "Elk River perspective" can do nothing but assist in making our community a better place to live, work, play and do business. The presentations will be followed by a question and answer session. (Tour of police dept) and group will then move to the Sherburte County Government Center for a tour of the counhouse, sberiff s facilities and jail. A select number of participants will have lunch in the jail. Others will have jail meals served in a jury room. The session will also include attendance at court proceedings and a review of civil law, followed by a question and answer period. Education Friday; April 19, 1996 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Location: Elk River Ciry Hall Facilitators: Rita Johnson & Chazlie Blesener This session will include a presentation on the role of education in the community relating to economic developmem, cultural emichment/differenccs and responsible citizenship. In addition, a discussion of current trends and/or happenings in education will be presented by representatives from District 728 schools, Anoka Hennepin Technical College and Anoka Ramsey Community College. llealUUlYWtlall JerVlceS a VU1IIllteerlSm Friday, May 17, 1996 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Location: Elk River City Hall Facilitators: Cazol Mills & Ken Ebel Participants will be introduced to the variety of health care and social services available within the Elk River community. Speakers will address current health care trends, azea health services, and economic issues which influence these programs. A tour will provide an on-site perspective of a local health caze facility. In the afternoon, local volunteers will share personal experiences, followed by a presentation by representatives of local organizations concerning volunteer needs and participant involvement. Graduation Thursday, May 23, 1996 6:30 p.m. Riverwood Conference Center Facilitator: Linda Frederickson Join program participants, spouses, friends and program facilitators to celebrate Leadership Perspectives. The evening will include dinner, program and graduation ceremony. Note: Participants will not graduate if they have more than three absences. Participants will learn about the'a personality and leadership styles and how they influence people around them. The session will also focus on application of type in wmmunication and professional working relationships. Leadership Skills Friday, October 20, 1995 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Location: Elk River City Hall Facilitators: Rick Olson and/or Myers Briggs resource Participants will be introduced to elements of effective leadership: self-esteem, motivation, goal setting, and time management. All topics will be discussed in light of type dynamics and development. The day will include presentation and group activity working with knowledge and skills learned through the Myers Briggs Type Indicator. Heritage/Cultural Diversity Friday, November 17, 1995 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Location: Elk River City Hall Facilitators: Kurt Kragcess & Dick Erickson Heritage: This session will introduce participants to Elk River's unique heritage. Special attention will be given to history, azchitectttre, current issues regarding the preservation of historical buildings and how these concerns will impact the future of Elk River. Cultural Diversity: Tbis session will introduce each individual to his/her unique cultural heritage. Specific attention will be given to: valuing diversity, personal uniqueness, eliminating barriers, and improving lines of communication between individuals. City, county and school district issues will be discussed by a panel of representatives from the city council, county commissioners and school board. The afternoon will be a fast paced interactive session where participants will learn how to successfully access the media through an increased understanding of how and why the media works.
