MEMORANDUM
Mayor & City Council
Lori Johnson, Asst. City Administrator
May 13, 1996
SUBJECT: Retaining Intern
In March Lea Aune started her internship with the city. As you may recall,
the Council approved 20 hours of pay per week at $4.35. Lea has actually
been working an additional 12 hours of unpaid time each week. In the nine
weeks she has been here, Lea has worked on a variety of different projects
mainly for the finance department, but she has also worked on a planning
project and has helped significantly with the Safety Committee. Lea took the
initiative to draft the AWAIR and ERTK policies for the Safety Committee's
review. All of the committee members have been very pleased with the
amount she accomplished and the quality of the product.
Lea's internship is scheduled to end on Thursday, May 16. Because of the
high quality and efficiency of Lea's work, I am requesting authorization to
retain Lea to complete some of the projects she will not have time to finish by
Thursday. The main concern is that Lea have time to complete the policies
she has drafted for the Safety Committee. Without her assistance, the
subcommittee chairs would not have draft documents ready for review. The
committee members felt strongly that if Lea was retained to focus on the
safety policies, they would be completed ahead of schedule without
demanding the huge amounts of committee member time needed to put
together the policies, time they may not have available to dedicate to this
project. Lea would also organize Safety Policy manuals for each department
as part of this project.
Action Requested
The City Council is asked to consider retaining Lea Aune on a temporary, as
needed basis at $5.00 per hour to complete the Safety Committee projects. It
is anticipated that approximately 80-120 hours (at the very most) will be
needed.
