5.0 ICE SR 01-14-2009MEMORANDUM TO: Ice Arena Commission, Members FROM: Rich Czech, Arena Manager DATE: January 8, 2009 SUBJECT: Agenda Memo -January 14, 2009 5. 2007 Financial update Tim Simon, the City's Finance Director will be in attendance to discuss the preliminary finances for 2008 as well as the 2009 Ice Arena budget. 6. New Zamboni The new Zamboni was put into service in the middle of November without any glitches. Attached for your review are a few pictures of the machine with the new graphics on it. The machine has operated smoothly and is getting about 10 - 12 resurfacings per charge, which is a few more resurfacings than the older machine. We tentatively have a sponsor for the second machine, however it takes a few days to put the vinyl graphics on the machine, which is not possible with the busy ice schedule the Arena has this winter. Once the advertiser is confirmed, we will schedule placing the vinyl graphics on the Zamboni in the late spring when we are not as busy. 7. Alumni Hockey Game Over the years I've wanted to put together a Boy's High School Hockey Alumni game. My thought is to have a line from each decade starting with 1970. The funds raised could go towards the building of the high school locker rooms. I'm trying to get a hold of Dan Hinote, Joe Otto, and Paul Martin to see if they would like to coach or play in the game. If we get enough volunteers from the Blueline club, Girl's booster club, and youth hockey we can even have a dinner afterwards at one of the restaurants in town or in the Barn. I' 11 have more information regarding the game in April. 8. Staff Updates A. Dry Floor Events The Arena's Annual Craft and Home Business Show is scheduled to be will be held May 2"d. This should be a telling year for the show, with the economy down, which causes the crafters to be more selective in the shows they go to, it will be interesting to see if the show fills and if people will attend the show. We will be offering a discount to venders, if they buy into the spring show they will receive a discount on their fee in the fall. Jose Cole Circus will again be sponsored by the Women of Today. Hopefully the show can continue to build on last year's increase in ticket sales. I've been in contact with Jim Wright, the owner of Crocodile Productions. Crocodile Productions produces trade shows such as Gun and Knife shows, Car Shows, and Military Shows. I am hoping that we can schedule a gun show with them for this spring. The Car Show that was scheduled for June 14`" has been postponed due to budget restrictions. Laura and I felt that during these unknown financial times it wasn't good to start a program as large as the car show. B. Clinics /Leagues /Annual Skate Show The Break Away Hockey League registration has begun with the league scheduled to begin March 16t". Roger's and Monticello will again participate in the league. The Skating Academy's Ice Show is scheduled to be held May 15t" and 16`n - registrations are now being accepted. The theme for this year's show is "Some Enchanted Evening". The show will have a Disney theme but due to licensing fees, the name needed to be changed to avoid charges from Disney. C. Arena Advertising As I mention above, we may have an advertiser for the second Zamboni. As far as the other advertising in the Arena we have lost two customers but have picked up two others. We have placed two more illuminated signs on the south end of the Olympic rink by the scoreboard, Northstar Access changed their bulletin board type sign to one of the illuminate signs, we have placed the Break Away logo as well as our Skills Plus clinic logo on the other sign until an advertiser can be found. D. Projects and Summer Repairs Depending on the budget, we will be concentrating on items that need to be done such as maintenance to the compressors and other equipment and not doing so much painting and other items that we may be able to get by with out doing for a year. Items such as a new window between the lobby and the Olympic rink will be one of the first items removed from the budget if funds are not available. E. Surveillance Equipment. With the help form the I.T. department, we have installed a surveillance system that allows us to expand up to eight cameras. As of now we have six cameras in operation. One over looking the till in the concession stand, a second one over looking the till in the Skate Sharpening room, a third in the lobby area over looking the vending machines, a forth over looking the shooting area and the hallway in the Barn, a fifth over looking the sheet of ice in the Barn, and a sixth over looking the sheet of ice in the Olympic. Our plans for the remaining two cameras are, one for the hallway to the locker rooms in the Olympic rink, and a second one for the lobby overlooking the new sitting area.
