ECCSR 12-19-2007fiver MEMORANDUM TO: Energy City Commission FROM: Rebecca Haug, Environmental Administrator DATE: December 19, 2007 SUBJECT: April 19, 2008 Energy Expo Update The Subcommittee met on December I I . The caterer has put together their menu and the following will be served: Brats, hot dogs, sloppy Joes, popcorn, cheese curds, bars, candy, chips, coffee, juice, pop and bottled water Staff is still looking at who will be providing the biodegradable and compostable food service items. Sherburne County has budgeted $I 1,600 for bussing, the children's performances, advertising, and biodegradable and compostable food service items. A tentative budget is attached. Spectrum Charter School will have the kick-off for the Energy Enny's and Energy Innovation Contest towards the end of January. Chair Zehringer suggested having the students tour the Environmental Learning Center and the power plant. School staff is still working on determining a dollar amount for both projects. Elk River Municipal Utilities will be putting information about the Expo in the January/February bill. Commissioner Burandt is going to check on the possibility of putting something in the Connexus bill and Chair Zehringer is going to check with Wright-Hennepin about a bill stuffer and possibly being a sponsor and exhibitor. So far, there are three exhibitors signed up. They are ECONAR, the Sierra Club and Ultimate Exteriors. Mayor Klinzing is in the process of signing all the letters to the possible donators and staff will be mailing those out ASAP. The next subcommittee meeting will be on Tuesday, January 8 at 9:00 a.m. in the Uppertown Conference Room at the Elk River City Hall. You must submit your invention to by 2008. The contest is open to students in the 11~' grade during the 2007 - 2008 school year at Spectrum Charter School in Elk River, Minnesota. All inventions submitted to the Elk River Energy Expo Invention Contest will be created by a team of two students and accompanied by the following information: Release and Agreement (WE NEED TO CRAFT THIS STILL) Elk River Energy Commission retains limited usage rights usage to all inventions submitted---to display them during the Expo Event and on the Energy City website and to film them for city cable channels across the state. Inventors' names, name of product or service and a complete description of that product or service should be written on one side of an 8 '/z x 11 sheet of paper. Because of display space constraints, inventions will be limited in size so that no dimension, height, width or depth, will measure over 5 feet. Extra credits will be given to inventions that utilize recycled components. Additional consideration will be given for the "craft" of the invention. The submission should look clean and neat and should be presentable to a "consumer" just like a product you would find in a retail store. Marketing materials that accompany the invention should also be designed and presented in a way that makes the invention easy for a consumer to understand. Features and benefits of the project should be clearly communicated. The budget for each invention should not exceed $ dollars. 2. PARAMETERS -How does your invention save energy or resources? The "Elk River Energy Expo Invention Contest" showcases the ideas and inventions of entrants in regards to energy or resource-saving products or services In addition to the invention, students are encouraged to include marketing materials that are designed to clearly present their ideas to the public and show the features and benefits of their submission. Both the invention and the marketing materials will be considered in the judging. The Rules • The invention competition will start with an announcement on or around 2008. • All submissions are due , 2008. • The Elk River Energy Commission retains limited usage rights usage to all submissions. Entrants agree to allow their inventions to be shown throughout the day at the Energy Expo event and also agree to allow their inventions to be highlighted on the Energy City website. • No more than $ should be spent on the invention • No dimension, height, depth or width can exceed 5 feet. • For additional information please contact Bob Freeh at 3. Share your "Energy Ezpo Energy Saving Film" Story You must submit your fdm to by 2008. The contest is open to students in the 9~' and 10~' grade during the 200? - 2008 school year at Spectrum Charter School in Elk River, Minnesota. All film submissions will be created by a single student and must be less than 5 minutes in length on DVD or VHS (DVDs are preferred) and accompanied by the following information: Release and Agreement (WE NEED TO CRAFT THIS STILL) Elk River Energy Commission retains limited usage rights usage to all films submitted---details are in the release and agreement. Filmmakers' names, title of film and credits. Each film must be produced using a budget of no more than $ 2. PARAMETERS -How does "Saving Energy" affect your life or affect the life of someone in your family? The "Energy Expo Saving Energy" film project explores how entrants or their families are positively affected by energy-saving techniques. The subject of the film can be serious or humorous. Creativity in the medium and also the subject matter is encouraged. Our Focus • The 'main character' can be you or a family member or a group of family members. Tell the story of how saving energy affects your main character/characters. The Rules • The film competition will start with an announcement on or around , 2008. • All submissions are due , 2008. • All films will be less than Sminutes long and will be submitted on DVD. • The Elk River Energy Commission retains limited usage rights usage to all submissions. Judges for the competition will be comprised of Elk River city employees as well as people chosen for their experience in the filmmaking industry.
