5. ECCSR 06-20-2007ver MEMORANDUM TO: Energy City Commissioners FROM: Rebecca Haug, Environmental Administrator DATE: June 13, 2007 SUBJECT: YMCA Update Due to discussions at our May 16~' meeting, Chair Zehringer, Vice Chair Stoutenburg, Bill Maertz, Park & Recreation Director and I spoke with the Electrical and Mechanical Engineers for the YMCA on May 24~'. The engineers discussed the technologies that are being proposed for the YMCA. Chair Zehringer made some suggestions on what type of lighting should be in the building and the need for occupancy sensors. The engineers seemed agreeable to changing the lighting standards to be eligible for the rebates from Elk River Municipal Utilities. Mr. Maertz stated that the YMCA acts like a retail center and needs to have lights on in certain areas of the building at all times. Because of this, occupancy sensors will only be installed in certain areas of the YMCA. The building will be incorporating recycled materials which they are hoping will be paid for by the Sherburne County Legacy Grant. I informed the engineers that Centerpoint Energy can offer rebates for LEED certification and they should contact Commissioner Berreman for more information. However, I received an a-mail from Mr. Maertz and the YMCA is designed to a LEED certifiable standard and close to silver. However, the YMCA project does not have the additional funds to go through the certification process. It has been estimated that it can cost as much as $100,000 to go through the commissioning needed to obtain LEED certification. I thought I would share this with the Commission and we can further discuss it at our meeting. Please let me know if you have questions about this prior to the meeting.
