Historic Downtown Signs
Murn Beck of the River's Edge Group has been in contact with me regarding
the installation of 2' x 6' aluminum signs on the four major highway
entrances to the city. Our sign supplier will charge $149 each to make the
signs and MnDOT will charge $200 each to raise the existing signs that read
Elk River, Population 11,143, and install the historic downtown signs below
them. The total cost will be $1,396 for the four signs.
One possible way to fund these signs is for the EDA to pay half ($698), with
the other half coming from the street department sign budget. ($698
amounts to over 20 percent of the remaining street department sign budget.)

As per our telephone conversation on May 30th, 1996 at 3:40pm regarding the three metal MN
k . signs that will cost $149.00 each and the $200.00 each for the State of Minnesota to move
them from the ground, we are asking if the City of Elk River would help in occurring the expense
in the signs and placement of the signs.
The River's Edge Group is also going to be putting a beautiful wood sign in the town square and
would greatly appreciate any help in this endeavor.

SUBJECT: Historic Elk River sign
I spoke to Pat Klaers about Murn Beck's sign permit application for the
Historic Elk River sign at Jackson Square Park, and he informed me that you
are the person in charge of this issue. I understand that you will be bringing
this issue before the Council on Monday.
From a zoning perspective, I have no problem with this sign. The sign is
31.64 sq. ft. and is printed back to back. This property is in the C-1 zoning
district and the sign complies with the requirements in this district.
This sign must have a minimum setback of ten feet from any public right-of-
way and must not impede visibility for traffic in this area. Additionally, this
sign will require an inspection by the building official, Cliff Skogstad,
regardless of who constructs the sign.
However, there is a $30.00 permit fee for a sign of this size, and Ms. Beck
seems to think this fee will be waived. Unless I hear otherwise, this $30.00
will be required prior to issuing this permit. Additionally, I will not issue
this permit until I get the city's permission to place this sign on city property.
