5.3. ERMUSR 09-11-2007/j Elk River Municipal Utilities 13069 Orono Parkway • P.O. Box 430 Elk River, MN 55330-0430 September 4, 2007 To: Elk River Municipal Utilities Commission Jerry Takle Jerry Gumphrey Jim Tralle From: Bryan Adams Subject: Elk River Geology Phone: 763.441.2020 Fax: 763.441.8099 On August 16, 2007 Dave Berg and I attended a DNR sponsored meeting concerning water quality and quantity issues in the northwest suburbs. The main purpose of meeting was to promote the shared use (and construction cost) of a proposed surface water treatment plant in Ramsey, Mn. DNR wants the City of Ramsey to use a Mississippi River source treatment plant in lieu of Mt. Simon Hinkley aquifer wells. The DNR is allowing Elk River to utilize the Mt. Simon Hinkley aquifer because of our pro-active conservation record and being outside the seven county metro area. During this meeting, they discussed the aquifers in our area. Attached are the following maps of our area. 1) Map #I is an aerial map of the northwest suburbs. 2) Map #2 is the same area as in the above map with the glacial drift removed to the first layer of bedrock exposed. Note the valleys in the bedrock where the gravel mines are located in Maple Grove and Elk River. Also note the original Mississippi River bed was much farther south. 3) Map #3 reflects the extent of the Mt. Simon aquifer in our area along with the other aquifers in the metro area. The reason the DNR wants us to construct a Mt. Simon observation well is because we are on the outer edge, and if the level drops, we will be one of the first to see the change and most impacted. 4) Map #4 is a section showing the different rock formation in the metro area. 1~ ~ a~nBi~ elevation (feet above mean sea level) C 3 ~ m0 ° s s 8~ 8 X 8 8 8$ ' n~~ O y m m ~~o _ o _ ~c~ a ~ ~ o ~ mZ0 n~ -~ d ~ 3 a ~ ~ ~ D " o ~ D-fJ ~ - 0 ~ 7 ~ D ~ r O ~ C g A c N D. r m TI m < y ~ ~ m ~ D in ~ Z Z ~ D~~ in ~ c ~" mm0 a ~ o D < i" a N O N A Vi d m ~i T d d O 3 m 0 I ~ ~ d d ~ N N C ~ 4 ~ N N (~ N {p ~_ ~ fn m y T N ~ o m mn w o g o a ° 'm ~ o ,'m nJ O O_ ~. d N 3 m m of ~N ~. ~~ 3 ~ m v m m T O d 0 o ~~ i iT ~~ °; d m = °1 o Z n~ O N A N _ n O f li O N NO O ° V O O O O 3 v n 7 C N fD O ` ~ m N ~ ~ o 9: d a D N o d a N a ~, O ' ~ N 0 m o 9 ~ ~p wV a~ g= ~= g~ ~~ g~ ~~,~ ~; ~ ~m ~~ ~ ~_ ~~ ~^ `- s z's ~ =d ~ ~ `--~ ro S m~~ g~~x ~~ ~,~~ .~~~ ~~~3o g~sm G fi ~~` ~ ~aa ~~S~S ~ Gad ~z$gs3~ m~= ,~g33 53~~3 o IIw ~o ~~~~~ ~',-8~ ~a3 ~~$~~~ 2 nos Y~83Q3Q ~~5 ~YS '~oz g a8' eE ~~~~~ $ ~yN k~'--=~ ~a gg^oo 202 -°' 528 $~ ,~ „'Z m ~~ S~ S~' ~g~ SQ ~~~ ga S~~Q ~~ g~ z~_ gm sm B~ ~.~~. s~ ~~ ~a~ ~~ ~_~ ~.gY m~~~ 8~ 8~8s3 8~ 3.~$ ~3 8 3 g3 3 ~m 5w S ,3 ~w ~~3r 38 ~~~ ~F ~F ~~ 'i F~ ~ Zm '~ 3~ ~J.s 3X Sm~h- ~~' g ~_ ~~_ ~a ~ fr= 3~ ~ ~.6 ~.~ ~~. 5° ~~~ his 3 ~ ~ n~ m 5 m 5 3 o d 5 < .Z ~a Z m°.d 8mc ~~ ~~ gU ~~ a~z °s3 3--;3 S ~- oa S- ~ ,2 ~ age s~ g$ 9g ~~ g~~ g $Zo cn c cD feat above sea level a I .o m O n io ~~~ o °m -' ti A w~ ~ ?~ 0 - ~ m ~ o Zo ~ u, -~ g ~ ~~-{{ y N ~ m z ~ C ~ (1 N .~ ~ D ~ N n _ ~ l 1 ~Iy ~~ ~ A T I , . , >m ~N g D . i I ( ~. i ~' A o ~'•,~/,~, ,, i ~ /i q fFZ w~ ~~ S i'. i l ~t ~ ~ ~ \ .'' . .' 1 ~ r.ij (~ ,,~. m ~~ ~~ ~ I i i ~ •-.I i D'i ~_ l .~.~'~"+' ~I /. v /, :,-~ ~ ,,;,,., 3 ~.~~,~~~ '~ v a ~ . ~%~~ ~ ~' i~/ J it .
