ck: .Johnson discussed with the Board his t~~ork: so far for the
~~eport to City Council. Ne teas deter~mined that the library is
presently serving a popul ation of 17,Girt:r, with 11 ,5irir in El t::
River proper. Ne presented the CircLrlatian Statistics from
1971 to present. Though there has been an increase during these
years, most noticeably in 1~?=~ ashen the new building opened, there
is no dear trend upward. For er.ample, in 1985, 198b, and 1987
there were decreases in the circL~latinn. 'Jenne speculated that
the numbers may not show a ±rue picture. Fnr e::ample, at that time
the 1 oan tune increased from '~ week:s to 3 weeks, and renewal
ove the phone becamer'~rnssibie. There has been a clear increase
every year~ in the juvenile circui:,tion. Mick: and Verne both
agreed that as the collection grows, the circulation increases.
Zact:: ventured that an e;:pansion wnLrld necessitate anott-per full time
employee and wanted to t::now what space needs that would create. Mick;
emphasised that more employee(s) would not need more desk: space, but
more work: space. She noted the need for more shelves where wort:: in
progress coLrld be stored.
Zack: asted us to think: about ^th~~er future needs for an e;;panded
library. Fnr e,:amp~le, how many more study carrels do we need;
do we need more or less display cases; should sae increase or
decrease the amount of art nn display; what impact will the AUA
'Disability Regulatinnsl have on aisle width and shelf height; and
nw much Space should be reser~ved in the addition for future
acquisitions (standard is 3ii;;) , Verne and Mick: also mentioned
that in ~ to ;~ years the check:-nut may be automated and we need
to include that in our plans. We all agreed that no mnre meeting
space will be needed, since the new City Nall is planning for
that in its future. Lack: al s~o as4::ed us to note any great or
innovative e;;amples of library planning and to bring those to
a future meeting. He grill meet with us again at our regular
meeting on November 19, 1991.
Gene Scheldt, City Council memCer, ~!ttended our meeting to volunteer
to be a sort of liaison between the Library Board and the Co!!ncil
on the issue of e;:pansion. He e::Rlwined that he has a vested
interest in the 1 ibrary G~_!ilding, since he was on tt-~e E~oard when
it ~•ras Guilt and is interested in seeing it being e::panded. He
said that it would be wise to 100{:: into acq!!iring adjoining land
whenever it beca~r~e availat~le. He is interested in receiving
information on our meeting times and attending those meetings.
Moving on the regular agenda, k::en moved to approve the minutes
of the September 17 meeting a.nd Ueb secs=nded. The treasurer`s
report was revie!•red and L!eb moved to approve it, hlarsha seconded.
We discussed the wa.lk:way Rroblem a.nd after disc!lssion we decided
that t•re should use a reserved piece of carpet that matches the
rest and ao ahead and ria`:~e the ~ci d stained carpet removed and
the reserved piece put in. The 1~~a.rd gave hlicl: the go ahead to
call Barrett's and have the w~rt_: done.
Action on the lighting of -the out=ide sign 'was tabled until we- -
find o~_!t how much money i~ left at ter the carpet is laid.
