YMCA update
Item # 4.2.
Mayor Klinzing is scheduled to provide the City Council with an update on recent
YMCA committee activities.
The most recent meeting of the Elk River YMCA Founder's Committee was held on
April I0, 2003 at Lions Park Center. Attached for your information is the agenda from
that meeting, a summary of the results of the Planning Subcommittee meeting, and the
minutes from the March 13, 2003 Founder's Committee meeting. The main discussion
items at the April I Oth meeting were the results of the Planning Subcommittee meeting
and fundraising.

MINUTES FOR THE MEETING OF
March 13, 2003
ATTENDANCE: Stewart Wilson, Keith Rosdahl, Nick Haidos, Ken Ebel, Bill Helliwell, Joni Lawrence, E.B. Stoutenburg IV, Troy
Sharer, Ron Touchette, Suzanne Kostanshek, Mary Eberley, Michele Bergh, Pat Klaers, Marilyn Schumacher, Wendy Simenson, Todd
Schoffelman, and Chad Lanners.

Meeting called to order 7:10am. Meeting began with introductions. Minutes approved
Opening Thought Joni Lawrence
Chairman's Report With the County's efforts currently stalled, Bill stressed the need to keep the YMCA project
Bill Helliwell "volunteer driven" as opposed to a City or County driven project. It is our job to show the
community that "the Y is here." We need to keep the programs going and maintain visibility. We
need more than a building, we need the community to become involved in order for any project to
succeed. It is important to continue looking for a big donor. There is grant money out there and
available. We need to establish a list of donors and actively recruit. Again, in an effort to gain
advice, Bill and Chad met with the Director of the Southdale YMCA. He reinforced that all
efforts need to be volunteer driven. We also need to expand beyond Elk River and look for
contacts in out lying areas such as Becker, Otsego, etc.
Progress Report Chad and Harold Mezile recently met with Bruce Anderson to gain some understanding of
whether the County project is still viable. The meeting was positive but there were no guarantees.
We need to proceed as if the County will not be a part of it. It is important to be focused on
creating our next steps.
Program Comnfittee The Program Committee met January 29, 2003 and looked at the year in review. Will continue
Todd Schoffelman with current programs. Day Camp Manitou will begin in June. The committee is investigating
contracting with local pools in order to run programs. The YMCA Learning Academy is a teacher
led tutoring program similar to Sylvan Learning Centers. The Elk River School District is very
interested in this program coming to Elk River. This program is currently running at the New
Hope YMCA. This would be a great opportunity for a partnership with the school district.
We have two grant funded programs; The ongoing YMCA Family Camp. which is a great idea
but needs more referrals, and the upcoming NYPUM program, a YMCA, County, and City
collaborative that will involve 11 at risk youth. NYPUM is a behavior modification program
using mini-bikes.
Senior Programs Chad and Sue Kostanshek worked on creating YMCA visibility with Seniors. A mini Expo has
Chad Lanners been set for May 16th, 8:30am - 10:30am at the Senior Center. Would like to bring the Sheriff in
to speak. Also would like to have seniors sign up for a "Y Day Trip", scheduled for May 28th.
This visit to a YMCA will help our seniors see the benefits of a facility and would include the
availability of water exercise, studio exercise, the track, whirlpool, etc.
A Senior day at Camp Manitou is also being planned for a date in August. It would include
cooking, fishing, birdhouse building, outdoor activities, etc. Great opportunity to expose the
Seniors to things outside the brick and mortar of a building. Day Camp could also evolve to be a
mentor opportunity for our seniors.
Communications The Communication committee met on February 27, 2003. The Business Expo is the next big
Committee event scheduled for March 30, 2003 at the High School. Mary Eberley donated the money for the
Ed Stoutenburg booth. Chad Lanners, Jason Bergquist, Rhonda Magnussen, Connie Gandrud, and Joni Lawrence
are all helping with the Expo. The purpose is to educate people that a YMCA is coming and we
need their support, to encourage people to contribute editorials to the paper or make phone calls
to the commissioners, and to gain new volunteers.
The Expo is well attended. Chad will bring schematics etc. to generate conversation. We will
provide temporary tattoos, a new handout and popcorn. There will also be slips for people to fill
out for YMCA shirts etc. Ron suggested that there be a sign up sheet asking if People are
interested in a YMCA. If there is no interest it is better to know now. He also stated that he spent
two weeks speaking with people and found that most people were unaware of the YMCA
presence in Elk River. "We need to be more out there."
Elk River Family Nights are scheduled for June 4th and August 27th , 6:00pm - 8:00pm at Lions
Park. The city does the promotion for these events. YMCA will serve food. Another great
opportunity for promotion and community involvement.
Bill mentioned the possibility of an Ambassador program, advocates who would be willing to
speak to groups or one-on-one to explain what a YMCA means to a community. Tell the story of
the YMCA to PTA's, the Chamber of Commerce, the Commissioners and their supporters. We
have spent so much time on program work and special events .... we need to be more "out there!"
Special Work Session A special work session was suggested for Tuesday, April 1, 2003. This meeting will evaluate our
direction and goals and add the focus needed. Those attending are Chad Lanners, Ron Touchette,
Mary Eberley, Kevin Maas, and Pat Lynch.
Finance Committee The Finance Committee has not met recently.
