Presentation: Elk River - Sustainable City Energy Showcase
As you are aware, the City of Elk River has been designated by the
Minnesota Environmental Initiative as the Sustainable City Energy
Showcase site. In recognition of this, Joel Burns, of the Minnesota
Environmental Initiative, will be available for a presentation at this
meeting. This presentation will include a general description of
"Sustainable City Energy Showcase", and include a discussion of its
implications and potential advantages for the City of Elk River. Mr.
Burns has also extended an invitation to local energy related company
representatives to provide their input as to the significant advantages
of this designation.
City staff Paul Steinman and Steve Rohlf will also be available to
discuss the local implications and future activities related to the
Sustainable City project.

Review Issues Discussed at Februa~. 12, 1996, Special City
Council Meeting Regarding an Economic Development Program
Attached to this memo are the minutes of the meeting held on Monday,
February 12, 1996, wherein a discussion of the city's economic
development program was held. Such discussion included a wide
variety of issues surrounding the hiring of a new director of economic
development. Further discussion at this meeting centered around
economic development issues and the general direction of economic

development in the city. Some of the issues discussed include the
following:
Director of ED to work with downtown businesses?
Time spent on commercial development versus industrial
development?
Where to grow the city's industrial base?
It would be appropriate at this time to further discuss these and other
general economic development issues as a continuation of previous
meetings regarding this issue. At this time, and with the intention of
pursuing a strategic plan for economic development, it would be most
appropriate for this group to prioritize the top three or four issues
which the economic development department should be pursuing until
we have accomplished the strategic planning process.
Attached to this memo are the meeting minutes of the special meeting
of the Elk River City Council regarding economic development issues
held on Monday, February 12, 1996, and the 1996 Economic
Development Work Plan as adopted by the EDA.
