5.2. SR 05-11-2009i f t~ver MEMORANDUM TO: Mayor and City Council FROM: Bob Pearson, IT Manager DATE: May I I, 2009 SUBJECT: IT Recovery Update Item # 5.2. The City of Elk River has computerized everything from permitting data to public safety data. One is pressed to come up with data that is not stored in an electronic format. The City's data resides on hardware called servers. The traditional implementation has servers dedicated to an individual application. Examples of this would be our "finance server", "email server", and "video server". The new model for hosting applications is termed virtualization and implements multiple applications residing an shared hardware. The purpose of my presentation is two-fold: to explain some of the benefits of virtualization and also to outline a request for implementation so as to move the Ciry into the next generation of technology.
