Rebecca Haug, the City of Elk River's Environmental Administrator made a presentation
to us about conserving energy. She said that rebates are available for homes and
businesses purchasing new energy efficient appliances and lighting.
www.elkriverutilities.com Vance Zehringer at 635-1330 can help with Business Energy
Audits.
Elk River Energy City's new program is Project Conserve. Thirty families were selected
to participate in a pilot project to extablish moey saving techniques regarding energy,
solid waste and transportaion through "reduction." Project Conserves 5 year goal is to
reduce electric use by 20% and gas use by 5%. Grants have gone to homeowners using
alternative energy sources. Eventually Energy City would like to include businesses in
Project Conserve.
Currently people come from all over the world to visit the landfill gas electric generating
plant located at the Elk River Landfill and also Riverview Farm which turns cow manure
into energy.
Elk River is holding their annual Energy Exp Saturday, April 18th
Old Business:
ArtSoup: Dave Raymond from the Arts Alliance reported that The Arts Alliance will be
holding ArtSoup, their community art festival, in Downtown Elk River on Saturday, June
20. They are planning a one day event this year. It will go from 11AM to 8PM. Similar to
past years, there will be music and entertainment in Rivers Edge Commons Park. Jackson
Ave will be closed between Highway 10 and Main Street for the day. Artists Booths will
be put up on Jackson Ave. There will be a tent in the parking lot behind the Arts Alliance
Gallery with art done by area artists. The old O'Reilly building will house a juried art
exhibit. There will be a member artist show in the Arts Alliance Gallery. Another tent
will be set up by the bottom of the park and will house Community Education and other
community groups. Applications for Artist booths, Juried Art Show and Food Vendors
are on the Arts Alliance Website www.elkriverart.or~.
In 2007 there were 40 art vendors and several thousand visitors at Artsoup.
All of our downtown businesses are invited to join in. The Arts Alliance is looking for
businesses who can partner financially and/or with their physical presence at the event.
Ads will be sold for the program. Sponsorships for performances will be available. The
target market for this event is residents from Elk River and surrounding communities.
The Elk River Lions Club is working on a Medallion Hunt for ArtSoup to help promote
the event.
Wendy and Donna are continuing to work on glossy downtown brochures to be
distributed at local hotels/motels.
Tony talked to the Swan Lady at Three Rivers Park. She said that swan waste on the
shoreline is an issue. If you feed the swans would need to do it on the island. Also, the
swans tend to be reclusive when their feathers fall off and wouldn't be readily visible
during the summer. We are not going to proceed with trying to attract swans downtown.
New Business:
Classic Car Show is being planned for Downtown Elk River Thursday, July 30tH
Businesses are encouraged to have a sidewalk sale that day.
Halloween 2009 is on a Saturday. How will this effect our event planning? We need to
put together a committee to plan.
Fast Cash has opened in downtown Elk River. It is a second hand consignment shop -not
a pawn shop.
The Current would publish information about activities in Downtown Elk River like the
Car show. The Article would need to be turned in by May 19th to go in the publication
that would be mailed July 19th
