In 2008, the Energy Expo was held at the City Hall campus and the emphasis was on the students from Spectrum Charter School featuring their Energy Enny's and Energy Innovation Projects. ~n April ~ $, 2009, the third Energy Expo was held again at the Twin Lakes Elementary School. Joe Shuster, author of tlae bool~ Be and Fossil Fools: A Roadma to Ener Inde endence b 2040 was the l~eynote speaker. There were approximately 30 exhibitors and over 300 participants. Participants had the option of going on a bus tour of some of the Energy City demonstr•atian sites. There were about 50 people who took part in the tours. There were children's' performances for both young and older children. The Lion's Club catered the event. It is believed that participation would have been greater if it had not been the fast nice day of Spring. The Energy City Commission is interested in continuing having the Energy Expo and has begun preliminary planning for 2010. The date of the event has been set for Saturday, February 27, 2010. An earlier date in the year has been selected to reduce the number of conflicts with other expos and not to compete with nice Spring weather, will Steger has been confirmed as the keynote speal~er. Mr•. Steger is a famous Minnesota polar explorer and educator, as well as founder of the will Steger Foundation He typically charges X10,000 for presenting but is willing to only charge us X5,000 plus ~~nileage from Ely, MN where he resides. "Eyewitness to Global warming" is Stager's vivid account of the changes that he's witnessed firsthand, caused by global warming pollutants in Arctic regions during four decades of polar exploration. Mr. Steger shares stunning photographs from his expeditions along with compelling data and satellite imagery to document the deterioration in the polar ice caps. While the issue is critical, and the presentation is dramatic, Mr, Steger~'s message is one of hope and empowerment. An understanding of our role in the causes and effects of global warming make this personal. But as Mr. Steger explains, solutions are readily available and by inal~ing economically and environmentally smart choices, people can make a difference. The Comna:ission believes that he will be a large draw. Because of this, we are hopeful that the venue for the Energy Expo will be the Ells River High School with Mr. Steger spearing in the Zabee Auditorium. Staff is awaiting canfumatian on the use of the high school, If this is not an option, the plan is to go back to Twin Lal~es Elementary School, There will nat be bus tours offered because of the time of year. only Tricia and the Toonies will be perfo~.•ming for the younger children as CLIMB Theatre was not very well attended. The Commission is worldng on some ideas for the older children, such as constructing a landfill with candy, renting bikes used at the State Fair that produce electricity, and having solar and wind turbine demonstj.•ation kits. Also, the Commission is wowing with local coffee and sub shops to provide food and beverages during the event. Some of the prizes that have been discussed to be given away are Fall-a-watt meters, which measure the amount of electricity used. This has been a ve~.•y eye-opening piece of equipment for• the Project Conserve participants, The Recycling Association of Minnesota ~R.A.M~ is interested in having a rain barrel sale at the Energy Expo where people would pre-register for a rain barrel and picl~ it up at the event. This has been very popular at the Living Green Expo and with other community events. inanCla~ Impact ,,..-~-_ aver the past three years, the City has budgeted the following: ~ 2007 - X30,000 ® 2008 - $20,000 ® Zao9 - ~ 10,000 As depicted on the attached 2009 Energy Expa budget, the costs were kept down with publishing costing the most. with the remaining 2009 funds, staff is proposing to pay Mr. Steger X5,000 this fall. Staff is recommending the Council approve X10,000 for the 2010 Energy Expo. This will be the fif.•st year we have costs associated with a keynote spearer and using the ERAHS and Zabee Auditorium. There will also be additional casts associated with advertising the event in the metro area. An effort will be made to utilize free advertising opportunities as well. As the 201 D budget looks, it appears that there is a deficit.
