Skogstad, (~e~,/ Building Official ~~ JIL- DATE: July 26, 1995 SUBJECT: Out of State Conference On September 11-15, 1995, the City of Madison Wisconsin is hosting a sprinkler and automatic fire suppression school at the University of Madison Wisconsin. For the past five years I have been present for this conference and have found it very beneficial for my code enforcement activity with the City of Elk River. In the past, I have attended building structural courses, code compliance courses, the legalities of code compliance, and also mechanical courses for commercial, industrial, and residential. As the Building Official for the City of Elk River, I do all plan reviews on sprinkler systems for commercial and industrial buildings. I feel this course will be beneficial in updating me in new technologies of sprinkler and suppression systems, and will assist me with my job in reviewing plans and inspecting sprinkler systems. My last class regarding sprinkler systems was approximately four years ago. This was a two day NFPA course certifying me in sprinkler inspections and plan review. Attached, is an outline of the sprinkler course being offered. As you review this information you will find that it covers all phases of fire suppression. Fire suppression systems are a critical part to all commercial construction activities, since the Uniform Building Code has changed considerably for commercial and industrial buildings and has made fire suppression a vital part of the building design. Therefore, I am asking the City Council for approval to attend this conference, September 11-15, 1995. The cost of this conference is approximately $1,100. Our emphasis will be on equipment selection and systems design. Presenta#ions on Monday through Wednesday wiq`focus''on sprinker systems; Thursday's and Friday's presentations will address alternate systems. More and more sprinkler systems are being designed hydraulically rather than by the "head count' method; frequently, computer programs assist in the design. Qur speakers, who. are knowledgeable in hydraulic ca~ulation and computers, will demonstrate computerrnethods and solutions. Optional computerworkshop sessions wilt provide an opportunity for hands-on experience using the SPRWK • softwate for computer modeling bf sprinkler systems. A sample diskette will be provided for your use during the computersessions.
