Hot ToPic~) of the Month
• A project that is a major focus point in the month of February is the creation of
the summer recreation program guide. As is usually the case with recreation
departments, summer program offerings require a great deal of work and planning
in order to assemble a well rounded list of program offerings. Staff is excited
about the wide variety of programs and events we will be offering to Elk River
Residents. The summer program guide will be available the first week in April.

84 people per day is the highest average per day since opening. Also 1758 is the third
highest monthly total since the doors opened. On Monday, Feb 22, 141 people came in one
day, an all time record. There were no special events that day, just regular programming.

• Ice Rinks -The ice rink season was very successful with a total of approximately 75
days. The season ran from mid December to March 1.
• "Local Showcase" -Staff have been inundated with calls and a-mails from bands
and performers who wish to play at River's Edge Commons. In summer of 2010 we
will begin a new program called "Local Showcase" on one Tuesday a month. The
Elk River Fraternal Order of Eagles donated $1,000 to Parks and Recreation and this
money will go towards a small stipend for the performers. Performers wishing to
participate can send an audio or video clip to the staff at Lions Park Center. Staff will
review performers and attempt to schedule a wide variety of local talent.
• Park Maintenance -The park maintenance crew has been busy removing dead trees
from along trails in Woodland Trails Park and Windsor Park. There are many dead
oak trees due to oak wilt and the crew is working at removing them where they are a
potential hazard to trail users.
• Lions Park Center Accessibility Grant -The State of Minnesota Office of Secretary
of State is currently soliciting grant applications from cities, townships and counties
specifically for automatic door openers to make polling places in Minnesota more
accessible. Lions Park Center does not currently have automatic door openers. The
total cost of installing automatic doors at Lions Park Center is $6,520 (tax included).
This entire amount is eligible for reimbursement. Staff has received City Council
authorization to apply for this grant.
