Council approval of the replacement of the Community Service Officer (CSO) position vacated upon the
promotion of Jesse Smith to Patrol Officer.
Background/Discussion
The Police Department has reviewed the CSO position and the duties performed by the
evening/weekend CSO. This position continues to be a proven, cost effective way to deal with animal
complaints, lost property, assists to the public, and other duties that don't require the services of a full-
time licensed Police Officer.
We are asking permission to post this opening and to begin the selection process to find a candidate for
final Council approval for hiring once the selection and background processes are completed.
We plan to post this position internally first, as we have several eligible reserve officers who we believe
will apply for this position.
Financial Impact
This is a current, budgeted position for 2010. The starting wage for the CSO is $12.95 an hour.
