The purpose of this memo is to provide a brief update on the recent and proposed marketing
initiatives of the Economic Development Division.

Economic Development Marketing/Exhibit
In the past, staff has used a display board (joint with Energy City) at various conferences and
expos, displaying various images/panels, depending on the event. This year, staff has purchased an
Energy Star flat screen TV to use as a display board. Staff will create a DVD with images and
information to display on the TV, in lieu of working with a marketing firm to create the display
panels fox each individual event. Doing this allows staff to convey increased information on the
TV, save costs in creating a new display for each event and create astate-of-the-art image for the
City.
In conjunction with the Neaur from the Hub newsletter re-design, new panels were created for our
exhibit; Location, E~ciency and Innovation. These panels feature attributes which convey and
highlight economic development within our City. Staff plans to continue to work with these
themes for future exhibits and marketing material. This effort supports the coordination between
economic development staff and the Energy City Commission to utilize Energy City as an
Economic Development marketing tool (2010 EDA goal).
Elk River 4th Annual Energy Expo -February 27, 2010
Economic Development exhibited at the Energy Expo this year. The exhibit featured our three
panels as well as available commercial and industrial sites, the economic development newsletter,
social media sites (Innovation) Northstar and housing information. Attendees were very interested
in information regarding the Northstar (Location) as well as housing programs (Efficiency). Staff
also provided available sites lists to those who inquired. The Expo was attended by over 600
people.
Direct Mailings

Staff will be sending out a mass `seed' mailing to our newsletter mailing list mid-April discussing
our social media sites. A second mailing will be sent out early fall to remind our key contacts that
we'll be exhibiting at the 2010 MNCAR Expo.
Elk River Area Chamber of Commerce Business Expo -April 11.2010
Energy City will be exhibiting at the Elk River Area Chamber of Commerce Expo on Sunday, April
11th. Economic Development staff will be present to assist in the exhibit and hand out various
ED materials (newsletter, housing rehab pamphlets) and interact with business owners/public.
Retail Trade & Analysis (RTA) Presentation
Staff is working closely with the University of MN Extension Service to obtain recent data and
plan and prepare for a presentation of the 2008 retail trade analysis report. U of M staff anticipates
receiving the data within the next month. Once the data is received, staff will partner with the
Chamber to host an RTA workshop. Results of the report are shared with landowners, property
managers and brokers of Elk River with sites for target marketing.
Sherburne County Developer Tour -May 6, 2010
For the past two years, staff has participated in the county's development roundtable. The goal is
to continue to build relationships between metro-area developers and Sherburne County economic
development professionals, County and Ciry officials.
This year, staff will participate in the County's 3rd roundtable, focusing on transit areas.
Developers will board a coach bus near the Twins stadium and arrive at the Government Center.
They will board a bus and tour Elk River and Big Lake respectively. There will be appetizers and
a reception at The Friendly Buffalo in Big Lake. After the reception, the developers will ride the
Northstar train back to the Twins stadium.
Greening the Heartland 2010 Conference- May 19-21
Staff is partnering with Energy City to exhibit at the 7th Annual Greening the Heartland
Conference. Consisting of over 15 chapters in 12 Midwest states, the Heartland Region is the
largest region of the US Green Building Council (USGBC). The $375 table top exhibit includes a
display booth at the event with an anticipated audience of over 1,000 attendees with close
association with the USGBC, the premier green building association and MN Green Communities,
the largest green building program in MN. This gives the City opportunity to network and gain
high visibility and name recognition with those throughout the 12 state heartland region.
2010 EDAM Summer Conference
Chris Carlson of Sportech, has also been asked to speak at the conference regarding corporate
culture. The EDA and Sportech received the 2009 EDAM Business Retention and Expansion
award.
Environmental Administrator Rebecca Haug and Elk River Municipal Utilities Vance Zehringer
have been asked to present at the 2010 EDAM Annual Summer Conference. They will be
presenting information regarding Energy City, Project Conserve, the Business Recycling Program,
partnering with your utility company and other Energy City related information. This collaboration
between the ED department and Energy City gives us the opportunity to use Energy City as an
economic development tool.
EDAM serves economic development professionals throughout MN and has more than 500
members who represent private enterprise, local and regional economic development agencies,
chambers of commerce and utilities. We anticipate approximately 100 people to attend the
Summer Conference. The conference will be held this year June 16th through 18th at Madden's on
Gull Lake.
MN Commercial Association of Realtors ~NINCAR) Expo -Land Development Conference -
October 27, 2010
This year, the City will be an exhibitor at the 4`d annual MNCAR Expo. The sponsorship includes
a display booth at the event with an anticipated audience of 600 commercial real estate
professionals from across the state, City recognition in all event print and email promotion
materials, including media advertising distributed to over 9,000 commercial real estate industry
professionals, City recognition on the MNCAR website from August-October 2010 and exhibitor
banner and expo program recognition. This gives the City an opportunity to network and build
relationships with commercial brokers and realtors and market our available sites in the City.
Commercial/Industrial Sites Inventory
A site inventory has been made available on our City website through MetroMSP.com, a site
selector website which allows users to search for available properties based on their own
customized criteria. Users can locate property in Elk River to meet their needs as well as create
compelling proposals which include demographic and business data to provide to potential
prospects. MetroMSP has partnered with MNCAR to provide users with an up to date listing of all
MNCAR properties. Staff also receives email blasts from MNCAR members who axe actively
seeking sites fox clients. This tool enables us to determine market trends and help identify potential
prospects for our available sites. Once the City Council finalizes the 171st Focused Area Study,
staff will upload a transit area site onto the website for additional exposure.
Restaurant Efforts
Staff has been closely monitoring MNCAR's email blasts for potential restaurants; staff has found
that most often they are only looking at vacant restaurant space rather than new construction.
Staff intends to meet with restaurant developers about their site criteria later this year. Staff also
intends on using the RTA data as a direct mailing, utilizing relevant data once the RTA workshop
has been held. In the past months, staff has met with a few local individuals interested in
restaurant start-ups as well as a developer who is working on identifying potential restaurants.
Economic Development Social Media
Staff has created an Economic Development Facebook page (Elk River ED) and Twitter page
(E1kRiverED) to use in conjunction with our economic development portion of the City's website.
Being a part of social media provides us with another avenue to convey information to residents,
business owners and developers.
