SUBJECT: Accept Gary Schmitz' Resignation
as Planning Assistant/Authorize
Advertisement to Fill Vacancy
Attached is a memo that was distributed to all Councilmembers last Monday
regarding Gary Schmitz' resignation from the City of Elk River. Since the
attached memo was distributed to the Councilmembers, Ihave not received
any calls or concerns, and therefore, proceeded to advertise for the planning
assistant position. As outlined in the attached memo, an ad will be placed in
the Star Tribune on Sunday, October 15th and 22nd, as well as the Star
• News on October 18th.
I will be available at the Council meeting Monday night to answer any
questions regarding the planning assistant position, and further update the
Council at that time.
Recommendation
It is recommended the City Council accept Gary Schmitz' resignation and
authorize staff to continue with the advertisement and interviewing to fill
the vacant planning assistant position.

to Advertise for Planning Assistant
Position
Last week Gary Schmitz informed me that he will be leaving the City of Elk
River, effective October 20th, to pursue another career opportunity that has
been presented to him. Gary's contributions to the City have covered many
disciplines and will be greatly .missed.
•
Given the amount of time to advertise for the position,. screening the
applications, interviewing those qualified candidates, and the fact that there
are many holidays in the next couple months, I suspect it will be roughly
January 2, 1996, before .Gary's replacement is on board. Given the amount of
work that needs to be done, I wanted to get this position advertised as
quickly as possible and begin the process to fill the Planning Assistant
position. Therefore, I have enclosed for your review a copy of the Planning
Assistant fob description. If the Council has questions, comments or concerns
with the. position as it is proposed to be advertised, please let me know as
soon as possible.. If I don't hear from the Council by Thursday I will proceed
to advertise the position.
The following is a tentative schedule that I would like to follow in order to fill
this position as soon as possible.

PLANNING ASSISTANT
• The City of Elk River has an immediate openi.n.g for the position of Planning
Assistant. This position reports directly to the City Planner. Responsibilities
include, but are not limited to zoning ordinance administration, coordinating
and reviewing development and subdivision proposals, reviewing conditional
use permits and other planning applications, preparing reports and various
studies, interacting with developers and residents of the community and
contributing to the city's long range planning efforts. Minimum
qualifications include a bachelor's degree in urban planning or related field,
and two years related municipal planning experience. Starting salary range
depends upon qualifications. Complete job description and application

490, Elk River, MN 55330, or by calling 441-7420. To be considered for this
position a completed city application must be submitted to the City by
November 15, 1995.
